Windows - Adding MS Windows to Your System76 Machine (for LVM Partitioned Computers)
From Knowledge76
Does your computer have LVM partitioning?
Recent System 76 computers come with LVM partitioning. This makes it impossible to dual boot Windows (or any other OS) onto the system without re-imaging.
If you are unsure about whether or not your computer has LVM partitioning, go to System > Administration > Partition Editor. If it doesn't exist, install it by going to a terminal and entering this command:
sudo apt-get install gparted
Open the partition editor. If you have LVM partitioning, it will look like this...
If it looks like this, follow instructions below. Otherwise, please see
our how-to here [1]for dual-booting Windows on a System76 computer with standard partitioning.
To add Windows to your LVM-partitioned computer, do the following:
1. Back up any personal files you do not wish to loose.
2. Using your Windows install CD, delete all the partitions on your hard drive.
3. Follow the install CD's directions for creating a partition for Windows. A good rule of, thumb is: if you are going to be using Windows 30% of the time, you might want to allot it 30% of the hard disk.
4. Continue following the install CD directions for installing Windows into the partition.
5. Boot into Windows and insert the Drivers CD that came with your system. It will guide you through the process of adding the necessary drivers for your Window's install.
6. When your Windows install is complete, insert your Ubuntu CD and install Ubuntu on the remainder of the hard drive (there is an option for doing this during the install process). Follow the instructions here [2] to bring your Ubuntu installation to factory standards. Ubuntu will automatically create a Grub Menu, which will allow you to choose which OS to boot.
