Laptop Modem (sl-modem) on Ubuntu Breezy

Overview

This article describes how to enable the modem on your System76 laptop. This how to will also work on other laptops that use the sl-modem software driver. Laptops sold after March 13th 2006 are preconfigured to work out of the box.

This article is for reference purposes only. The on-board dial up modems on System76 computers are currently unsupported.

Directions

From your terminal type

sudo apt-get install sl-modem-daemon
sudo wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf

Add the following line to the bottom of the file

Carrier Check=No

Save and close the file

Connect to your ISP

You can use the Networking administration tool to connect to your ISP. Change the settings to reflect your ISP's requirements.

  • System > Administration > Networking
  • Click Modem Connection then the Properties button
  • Tick the Enable this connection checkbox
  • Enter your ISP's phone number and your username and password
  • Click the Modem tab at the top of the window
  • Next to the Modem Port box click Autodetect
  • Click OK
  • Activate the Modem connection

The modem will now dial the phone number you provided and connect to your ISP. This can take a couple minutes. You will not hear any modem tones (even if your selected loud for the volume.)
