Creating a basic (data) CD or DVD is built into Ubuntu. CD/DVD writing is also known as burning.

Simple data CD
(For a video of the steps refer to Burn CD video)
Just pop a blank CD or DVD into the drive and a window will pop-up asking you what you want to do.

If you click on Make data CD you will get the built-in application Nautilus (assuming you're using gnome, which is the standard on knowledge76 machines). Same thing for DVDs.
You then get this window:

Just drag the files you want into this window and select Write to disk. Simple.
If you need to create a disk image (from a .iso file) eg if you want to create a Ubuntu installation disk, then just select ignore. Find the .iso file, right click on it and on the drop down menu select Write to disk. It's as simple as that!
Multisession disks
Although the built in (nautilus) software is great for quickly creating data, audio and .iso image disks it does have a serious limitiation in that it doesn't support multisession CDs. What that means is when you create a CD/DVD, you cannot subsequently go back and add more data onto it, even if there's tons of space available. When nautilus burns the media, it closes it so it cannot be written to again, even with other software or other operating systems. So if you burn a small file to a DVD, the majority of the DVD will be wasted.
To write multi-session media you need to install something like k3b or X-roast. (Gnomebaker has had some reports of problems with gnomes autoload affecting multisession CDs.)
They are very simple to use, once installed, start them from Applications->Sound & Video.
