It's All About Ubuntu
Ubuntu is a professional Linux distribution sponsored by Canonical Ltd. The distribution is among the best available and the chosen operating system of System76. Ubuntu provides a clean and easy to use interface complete with the productivity tools most users need. In addition Ubuntu caters to new Linux users as well as advanced users. The ability to combine ease of use without compromising advanced capabilities has propelled Ubuntu the top of the Linux distribution list.
The Ubuntu Philosophy
The people at Ubuntu have an excellent philosophy behind their operating system and what they are doing. From the Ubuntu website:
"Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others". Ubuntu also means "I am what I am because of who we all are". The Ubuntu Linux distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.
The team behind Ubuntu makes the following public commitment to its users:
- Ubuntu will always be free of charge, and there is no extra fee for the "enterprise edition", we make our very best work available to everyone on the same Free terms.
- Ubuntu comes with full commercial support from hundreds of companies around the world. Ubuntu is released regularly and predictably; a new release is made every six months. Each release is supported with free security updates and fixes for at least 18 months.
- Ubuntu will include the very best in translations and accessibility infrastructure that the Free Software community has to offer, to make Ubuntu usable by as many people as possible. We collaborate as widely as possible on bug fixing and code sharing.
- Ubuntu is entirely committed to the principles of free software development; we encourage people to use free and open source software, improve it and pass it on.
Ubuntu Releases
Ubuntu is generally released every six months. The version number comes from the year and month of the release rather than reflecting the actual version of the software. Each release also has a silly animal name, just for fun. The first release (Warty Warthog) was in October 2004 so its version was 4.10. The current version (Karmic Koala) was released in October 2009 so its version number is 9.10.
